Hands on Learning

In recent years there has been so much focus on online learning especially during the times of the pandemic. While online learning is very useful the need to incorporate hands on learning is equally if not more important especially in the special needs community.

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student with certain challenges complete a task on their own. They feel a sense of pride knowing that they can complete a skill that they thought they never could do. It is amazing to present tasks to your students that give them a head start to understanding how things work, skills that are used at a job, and even skills needed around the home.

I found my passion working with students with special needs and providing tasks for them to help them be successful not only in the classroom but more importantly at home or on a job. One task I have in mind is an order filling task. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Vocational-Customer-Order-Task-Verbal-and-Nonverbal-Version-4895773

This vocational task helps the student learn important skills by filling orders for customers. I had students go on to work in hospitals filling patient tray orders to working in fast food helping to fill orders. Tasks that are hands on like this help them to receive the basics in following orders and filling them accurately.

I encourage you to provide as much hands on activities for your students. It gives them a sense of pride and accomplishment.
